Julie, also popularly known as “Mom Taxi”, has been married for 19 years and is a mother of three awesome kids.
She works part time, and has a lot of hobbies!
Please tell us something about yourself.
I am 39 years old and a married (almost 20 years) mom to 3 children ages 18, 13 and 10. I work part time.
I have lost 55 pounds in the last year through diet and exercise (no magic pill here!)
How did your weight loss journey begin?
I began my weight loss journey almost a year ago at 204 pounds.
I was sick and tired of myself. Disgusted really. Sometimes it takes getting to that point to get yourself to finally take action, and well, I was there.
A friend of mine was using the website (also an app) called Lose It. She had lost quite a bit of weight and was always talking about calories.
I was so miserable with myself I decided why not try it? The night I made that decision is the night that changed my life.
Did you follow a particular diet regime? What exactly did you do to lose weight?
When I first started my new lifestyle I just focused on getting through each day without going over my calories. The thing that appealed to me most about this was that I could eat anything I wanted just as long as I didn’t go over.
I did of course, try to limit the “bad” foods. I had done the South Beach Diet in the past and the whole good carb – bad carb is totally ingrained in my way of thinking even all these years later.
I started looking for lower calorie recipes online (SkinnyTaste.com is my favorite) and that really helped me. It was fun to try new recipes. My family didn’t seem to notice too much since most of the food was pretty good!
Apart from diet changes, what else helped you lose weight quickly?
After I started losing weight and feeling more in control of myself, my son and I started riding our bikes around the neighborhood.
At first I couldn’t go far but it wasn’t long before I was sneaking out so I could go farther and faster without anyone holding me back!
Eventually I decided to do the Couch to 5k program. I had tried it before and always ended up quitting.
This time (maybe partially due to riding my bike and being in a bit better shape already) I was able to complete the program. Finishing it was really a huge huge milestone in my life. I literally cried big huge sobs when I finished that last run.
After I finished the 5k program I moved onto the 5k-10k (active.com app) and completed that also. I am now going to train to run a half marathon.
Did you follow any exercise routine, over and above the diet changes?
Through a friend of my brother, I started meeting with a trainer (in the middle of when I started doing the couch to 5k running program). We mostly focused on lifting weights.
The transformation I started seeing in my body was amazing! Who knew that I had muscles lurking under there?
Being a busy mom, how did you juggle time between weight loss activities and your family responsibilities?
All this exercise definitely takes time away from my family. I’ve struggled a lot with the “mommy guilt”, especially now that I am not meeting with the trainer anymore and I don’t HAVE to go to the gym for an appointment time.
There is always homework to help with, laundry to do and meals to cook.
I’m not going to lie, it’s not easy! I try to include the family a lot, but sometimes I just want to go run by myself. Sometimes I NEED to just go by myself. It’s all quite a mental game that we play with ourselves.
After losing all this weight, how do you feel?
Now that I am down about 55 pounds, I feel so much more confident.
I love being able to wear cute clothes. I think the best part is seeing pictures of myself and not wanting to light them on fire!
I still struggle every day with wanting to eat all the donuts in the office. I know that I am going to have to continue working at this.
It’s not a quick fix. I know that if I don’t keep counting calories that I will gain my weight back. I’m determined to stay focused and not let that happen.
